SCS hosted a panel discussion at the K2019 trade fair in Düsseldorf. The event tackled the unique capacity of polystyrene for full circularity due to its intrinsic ability to be easily recycled back to its original monomer, emphasising that recyclates meet the highest quality demands and are suitable even for food contact. Participants analysed where the styrenics industry is on the path to implementing and scaling up game-changing recycling technologies, as well as opportunities in linking regional post-consumer feedstocks and the challenges to be overcome.

Speakers included:

  • Jens Kathmann, Secretary-General, Styrenics Circular Solutions
  • Jocelyn Doucet, CEO, Pyrowave
  • An Vossen, Managing Director, Plarebel
  • Jürgen Priesters, SVP Circular Economy, Tomra
  • Anabela Ferreira, Executive Board Member, Intraplás
  • Rüdiger Baunemann, Director General, PlasticsEurope
  • Germany and Regional Director Central Europe, PlasticsEurope

The event was moderated by Chrissi Schönfelder, Chair Communications & Advocacy at Styrenics Circular Solutions.

The panel discussion was followed by a dialogue forum where participants were able engage in one-to-one conversations with members of the value chain.

Jens Kathmann, Secretary-General, Styrenics Circular Solutions
“We know the unique potential of styrenics for true circularity. We are engaging with the whole value chain to develop and scale up the innovative technologies to recycle styrenics back into high-quality applications, even for food contact. Our challenge is to create a market pull away from incineration and landfill towards the game-changing recycling solutions for styrenics.”
